Africa. PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM OF 66 VERNACULAR IMAGES SHOWING AFRICAN PEOPLE IN
VARIOUS LOCALES, THEIR COSTUMES, DWELLINGS, LANDSCAPE, &c. EARLY IN THE
20TH CENTURY. Original photograph album. The 66 photographs in this album
are inserted in clear corners on black stock, and labeled in white in
English and Arabic. Images range in size from 2 ½” x 3 ½” to 6 ¾” x 9 ½”.
One photograph has a embedded label, “Photographer Ivor J. Pell, U.D.F.”
(Union Defence Forces in South Africa). Contained in a three-ring album
with blue leather covers, 9" x 11.75". Very Good condition.
These are high quality images taken mostly in diverse parts of Africa,
including Morocco (Tangier, Marrakech), Northern and Southern Rhodesia,
Libya (Benghazi, Derna), the River Zambesi above Victoria Falls, Egypt
(Port Said, feluccas on the Nile), Sudan (Khartoum, etc.), Ghana, Algeria,
and the vaguely labeled “East Africa” and “Southern Africa” and “West
Africa”. Photographs depict the natives of these areas, sometimes in
traditional dress (baby carried in a back sling, woman with earlobes pulled
down by heavy rings, women with baskets on heads, men in loincloths or
sarongs), and sometimes in Western clothing (shorts and polo shirts, a
woman dressed in a housedress and apron holding a plucked bird, etc.).
Occasional views show Caucasians among them, including: “missionaries” and
their flock; young African boys of “Nicholas School” with their white
teacher; and two small girls in sunsuits posing with two African men in
shirts and shorts--and a crocodile. There are also photographs from Punaluu
(Hawaii), and Yemen (men with baskets of fish on a beach) and New Guinea
(some men in shorts, some in loin cloths). Inexplicable among these are
three small photographs of Native Americans (labeled “warriors”) on
horseback, near tepees, wearing full headdress.   $450.00
