This is the only edition in quarto of Labat's important account of the West Indies, where he worked as a Dominican Missionary (1693-1705). The first folding map of Mexico & North America shows California as a large island. The plate count varies. The most common total number according to a survey of auction records is "64 maps & plates." Some records show 63, 66 (as in our copy), and a few have 68 or 69 total plates. Sabin 38411, "The collation (i.e. plate count) varies." European Americana 724/16.
