Robert Kelham: Domesday Book Illustrated: Containing an Account of that Antient Record; As also of the Tenants in Capite or Serjanty therein mentioned; And a Translation of the difficult Passages, with Notes; An Explanation of the Terms, Abbreviations, and Names of Foreign Abbies: And an Alphabetical Table of the Tenants in Capite or Serjanty in the several Counties contained in that Survey. London: Printed by John Nichols for Edward Brroke, 1788. FIRST EDITION; 8vo (21.5 cm) in early full calf; viii, 399, [1] pp.; with the half-title page. ESTC T96453.

The greater part of the text consists of translations/explanations of the "difficult passages" in the Domesday Book. Quite fascinating. Who knew that "int´sect' fuit ppt´ latrociniú" means "was put to death for robbery"? Binding with modest rubbing, wear to the corners, joint/hinges cracked with the boards held by the cords; a very few occasional small spots and stains to the leaves, but overall very clean and fresh. Engraved armorial bookplates of H. F. Davies of Elmley Castle and William Battell. Interestingly, the latter has noted in pencil the cost of binding the book in 1811.
