8vo. 7 3/8 x 4 3/4 inches. (12), 356 pp. LACKS THE MAP, a few tables in
the text; text clean, unmarked. Original brown cloth, spine titled and
decorated in gilt; binding square and tight, head and foot of spine
chipped, boards showing beneath the cloth on bottom edge. Red "CHS DUP"
rubber stamp on rear end-paper. Sold AS IS.

FIRST EDITION. Elisha Smith Capron left New York City on April 23, 1853,
passed through Nicaragua and on to California where he arrived in San
Francisco on May 21st, as commercial agent for a number of mercantile
houses in New York. During his mission, Capron "visited the principal
cities and villages of the state.... He also traversed various parts of
the mining regions, and sojourned with the miners, among their valleys
and mountains." The second part reports on San Francisco, including
sensational aspects the city. The third part discusses mines and miners,
including mining techniques and social conditions. The final part is
