Dear Colleagues,

The auction for our #1147 of 1150 copies signed by Arthur Rackham (does
his autograph look weary?) is ending in two days on Friday morning. Though
certainly not shabby, this volume would be a great candidate for a
beautiful new binding. If you are interested and the book is not sold, it
could be yours for $550 postpaid, insured. Here is the link

A beautiful Spring day here in the Hudson Valley!

All best, Karen Cinquemani

The Rhinegold & the Valkyrie. by Richard Wagner. With Illustrations by
Arthur Rackham. Translated by Margaret Armour. Volume I of The Ring of the
Niblung. London: William Heinemann; New York: Doubleday, Page, & Co.,
1910. First Folio Limited Edition, Number 1147 of 1150. Numbered and
signed by illustrator Arthur Rackham. Large quarto hardcover (11 11/16" x
9"). 159 [161] pp. With 34 full-color plates tipped onto heavy brown
kraft-like paper. Vellum leather spine and corners with brown
paper-covered boards. Gilt spine titles on brown leather labels. Gilt line
decoration on front and back covers. Top edge gilt. Brown endpapers match
cover and backing papers of plates.

Good condition. Spotting/mottling of vellum, soil and spotting on paper
boards; spine edges somewhat bumped; leather labels crazed and rubbed;
binding tight; contents clean and without foxing or spotting, but exhibit
slight usual waviness in fine, heavy paper. No silk ribbon ties with this
binding. Small pink bookseller's label (from original purchase) on lower
corner of rear paste-down: "Brentano's Booksellers & Stationers, New
York." No previous owner's names. All the exquisite plates present and
fine with titled tissue guards.

While the first trade edition without the famous illustrator's signature
is quite common, the signed, limited edition in various bindings remains
scarce. This volume is the perfect candidate for a new custom binding.
