"The musical structures of Handel's anthems and those of his English predecessors and contemporaries which have to be considered in the assessment of the musical origins of oratorio, are of less concern than their verbal composition. In performance the music was more ideal than real because chorister's and congregations did not necessarily hear what the composer had written, but the texts of the anthems could be relished by all with the money to buy the collections... which were published at three points during Handel's English oratorla career, in 1724, 1736 and 1749... (the composers represented run from Tallis to Boyce." Smith. HANDEL'S ORATORIOS AND EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY THOUGHT.
