"The Story of Caspar Hauser, the Nuremburg Foundling"
Printed in Worcester by the Press of F.P. Rice, in 1877.
An American issue of a text that was originally published in the Penny
Magazine in 1834, just a year after Hauser's mysterious death. "It
presents, in the relation of details, a very full and complete account
of this wonderful person; and will prove interesting to those who are
not familiar with his sad and romantic story. For the gratification of a
few friends, a small edition has been reprinted, to be privately
distributed." Kaspar Hauser (1812-1833) was, or was not, a long-lost
prince of Baden, the son of a German cavalryman mysteriously raised in
confinement by a masked man and then dumped on the streets of Nuremburg
at age 16, or a fraudster, trickster and con-artist who accidentally
took his own life while attempting to revive flagging interest in his
stories. His claims have been investigated and dismissed by historians
and medical experts, and we are left with "fraudster", but they
nonetheless made for exciting speculation and reading throughout the
19th century. Uncommon; OCLC locates 5 copies.
Softcover. 5.5"x7.5", 39 pages. Covers with some light wear and some
stains. Pages with some minor soil, but overall clean and good. [42332]
