*Denis Diderot, Jean le Rond d'Alembert (eds.), */*Encyclopédie, ou
dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers
*/
/**/The /Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts
et des métiers/ was a general encyclopedia published in Paris between
1751 and 1772, with later supplements, revised editions, and
translations. It had many writers, known as the Encyclopédistes. It was
edited by Denis Diderot and, until 1759, co-edited by Jean le Rond
d'Alembert. It was, and remains, a massive undertaking, normally found
in 35 volumes. /Wikipedia/ offers the following statistics:
Approximate size of the /Encyclopédie/:
* 17 volumes of articles, issued from 1751 to 1765
* 11 volumes of illustrations, issued from 1762 to 1772
* 7 volumes of supplementary material
* 18,000 pages of text
* 75,000 entries
o 44,000 main articles
o 28,000 secondary articles
o 2,500 illustration indices
* 20,000,000 words in total
* Print run:4,250 copies (note: even single-volume works in the 18th
Century seldom had a print run of more than 1,500 copies).
Our offering is the five volume condensed edition, published in 1969 by
Pergamon Press, and bound in red buckram with lettering and
embellishments. Each volume measures 40 x 27 x 6.5 cms. The full text
and images are reduced to four double-spread pages of the original
appearing on one folio-sized page of this printing, similar to the
condensed edition of the Oxford English Dictionary. Each volume contains
between 1150 to 1,500 pages, with illustrations. The boards of each
volume show very slight shelf wear, else they are unmarked, the binding
remains strong, and the contents are pristine.
This is a /very/ heavy set of books and shipping charges may be a
factor. However, it is likely that we can ship to an American
destination for about $35, to a Canadian destination for about $50 (plus
GST) and overseas to be calculated according to the preference of the
purchaser.
Price: $500
Terms of Sale: All prices are in USD. The price of this offering is
special to the list and thus is net to all. Payment may be made by
check, credit card, or PayPal. Returnable (with advance notice) if found
