the library of Henry James. London: Chapman & Hall, 1870. Original 
cloth. Six volumes from the 30-volume set of THOMAS CARLYLE'S COLLECTED 
WORKS. Henry James's copy, SIGNED by him on the front free endpaper of 
the first volume of OLIVER CROMWELL'S LETTERS. The other 5 volumes, all 
uniform in appearance and none of which is signed, include volumes 4 and 
5 of the five-volume Cromwell set, volumes 1 and 6 of CRITICAL AND 
MISCELLANEOUS ESSAYS, and SARTOR RESARTUS. Leon Edel and Adeline R. 
Tintner, authors of THE LIBRARY OF HENRY JAMES, identify Carlyle's 
OLIVER CROMWELL LETTERS AND SPEECHES, the 1870 Library Edition, as being 
part of the Henry James collection. This title was given an A-FH 
designation, indicating that a copy signed by James is known to exist 
but its whereabouts are unknown. Edel and Tintner's listings will now 
merit a revision. The signed volume shows offsetting to the title pages 
with the rear hinge cracked. Front hinge of SARTOR nearly separated. 
Textblocks clean and mostly unopened. Moderate shelf wear, spines 
uniformly toned with wear at the tips. Overall Good condition.
