New Jersey Militia. PAY ROLL OF EMPLOYEES AND LABORERS ENGAGED DURING THE
ENCAMPMENT OF THE NEW JERSEY BATTALION AT YORKTOWN, VIRGINIA, OCTOBER 1881:
Handwritten details and signatures on a printed form. Original document.
Broadside, 17" x 14". Red-ruled columns, extensive entries in sepia ink.
Lists 20 individuals, terms of service, pay per day ($1.50-$2.75), total
pay per man, signed by each of the 20, and witnessed by W.P. Wells. Signed
at the bottom by Abram Swan. Docketed on the verso. Very Good condition.
Surnames include Swan, Lambert, Campbell, Orr, Rodman, Nutt, Lenox, et al.
This provisional battalion represented New Jersey at the centennial
celebration of the Battle of Yorktown, when Washington led American troops
to victory over Cornwallis and the British army--commonly considered the
most important battle of the American Revolution.  $175.00
