Fremont, John C. REPORT OF THE EXPLORING EXPEDITION TO THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS in the Year 1842, and to Oregon and North California in the Years 1843-44... Washington: Gale & Seaton. 1845. First edition. 8vo. 693,(1)pp. This copy with the 22 lithograph plates, but only 4 of the 5 maps -- lacking the large folding map usually present in the rear pocket (see below). Bound in cont. full pebbled calf, ornately gilt covers and spine. A.e.g. Very possibly a publisher's "deluxe" binding. Inscribed on the free endpaper "To Mrs. J. Bucknall Estcourt with the respectful regards of her friend, Jessie Benton Fremont, Washington City, June 18, 1846." Some foxing to the plates. $500.00 (trade discount allowed)
The preferred Senate issue. There is no rear pocket in this copy to hold the large folding map. Perhaps (?) this is a variant version not sold with this map? Mrs. Estcourt was married to a high ranking British military officer, traveling through Washington. Howes F370. Wagner-Camp 115:1.
