Holidays With Hobgoblins: and Talk of Strange Things. By Dudley Costello.
With Illustrations by George Cruikshank. London: John Camden Hotten, 1861.
Crown Octavo (7" x 4.5"). 332 pp. with 8 pp. of publisher's ads at back.
Custom-bound pebbled dark olive green half leather with dark green and
gold marbled boards with gilt spine lettering and decoration, five raised
bands. Gilt rules. Top edge gilt (bright). B&W frontispiece etching by
Cruikshank (no tissue present). With three additional full-page black and
white etchings by Cruikshank and two smaller eighteenth-century etchings
(unsigned but captioned) used as chapter headings. Quarter-page note
tipped in after table of contents explains that Cruikshank designed the
frontispiece expressly for this volume, while the additional illustrations
are earlier Cruikshank designs borrowed to illustrate this work.

Very Good condition (some mottling of leather and rub at edges of spine
and corners; spine leather sunned to brown; light foxing on edges and
verso of plates, as well as on facing pages of plates; sporatic finger
soil; paper age-toned; thicker paper of full-page plates show a narrow
water stain along front edge, but stain is not evident on pages of text;
red bound-in ribbon bookmark frayed short at end; bookplate of former
owner, Francis Towner Laney, on front past-down). No other marks or names.
Binding secure.

Irish author Dudley Costello (1803-1865) served in the British army;
worked as a draughtsman for famed naturalist Georges Cuvier; copied
illuminated manuscripts, inspiring renewed public interest in this
medieval art form; and finally became a foreign correspondent, journalist,
and editor for a variety of British newspapers. He wrote both travel
memoirs and fiction. Holidays with Hobgoblins is a combination of the two:
a collection of fictional "travel writing" and strange tales, including
location-specific stories of the supernatural such as "The Ghost of Pit
Pond" and "The Haunted House Near Hampstead."

George Cruikshank (1792-1878) is a famed illustrator and caricaturist,
most noted for his political cartoons and his etchings illustrating the
works of Charles Dickens. Holidays With Hobgoblins is scarce, illusive
Cruikshank title, and this is in appealing, collectible condition.

Formerly owned by Francis Towner Laney (c.1914-1958), writer, editor, and
publisher of The Acolyte, an extrememly early fanzine devoted to the
writings of H.P. Lovecraft. The Acolyte, published from 1942 to 1946, is
regarded as fundamental to the incipient development of Cthulhu and
Lovecraftian mythology.

29 libraries on WorldCat own this 1861 First Edition including New York

and is catalogued by six libraries.
