Edward Hyde, earl of Clarendon: A Brief View and Survey of the Dangerous and pernicious Errors to Church and State, in Mr. Hobbes’s book, Entitled Leviathan. By Edward Earl of Clarendon. Oxon [Oxford]: Printed at the Theater, 1676. The second impression (same year as the first); 4to (23 cm) in early/period leather and boards; [8], 322 pp.; engraved frontispiece, vignettes, and initials. Wing C4421; Madan III, 3111; ESTC R12286.

Famous attack on Hobbes by the Earl of Clarendon (1609-1674), former counselor to Charles I and chief minister to Charles II, and historian of the English Civil Wars. The work was published posthumously and the proceeds went to establishing Oxford's Clarendon Press — ironically, the future publisher of one of the most popular editions of Hobbes's Leviathan. Spine leather gone, front and rear leather detached from the boards, binding tender but holding; toning to the edges to the leaves, occasional light (erasable) penciled marks in the margins, a few small spots, else quite clean. Internally, a nice copy, complete with the frontispiece often found lacking, well worthy of a rebind.
