*Description*

A Very Good or better Manuscript Poem Written, Signed, and Dated by Celia
Thaxter entirely in her hand on a single sheet of paper measuring
approximately 10 inches X 5 1/2 inches with a short tear to the upper left
corner, and affixed to a slightly larger piece of card stock. The Poem was
later published under the title "The Double-Sunflower" in a collection of
Thaxter's Poems titled "Drift-Weed" (Boston: Houghton, Osgood, 1879) with
slight variations as published in "Drift-Weed from the Poem as written by
Thaxter in the earlier manuscript version of the Poem described herein. The
Poem contains seven stanzas of four lines each for a total of 28 lines
above the signature and date. Celia Thaxter, an American writer of Poetry
and stories, left the husband that she found unsatisfactory to return to
her father's home on Appledore Islands becoming the hostess at her father's
"Appledore Hotel" (one of the first resort hotels to be built on the New
England coast) where she welcomed and came to know New England's artistic
and literary notables such as writers Harriet Beecher Stowe, Henry David
Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry Wadsworth
Longfellow, John Whittier, Sarah Orne Jewett, and artists William Morris
Hunt (who drowned while at the Appledore Island, presumably a suicide) and
American impressionist Childe Hassam who illustrated some of Thaxter's
work, and where she grew to become one of America's most popular writers,
perhaps the most widely published woman writing poetry in America during
the second half of the nineteenth century. [The Colby Quarterly, Volume 17,
Issue 4, December, 1981 contains a notable and interesting article titled
"The Role of Celia Thaxter in American Literary History: An Overview".]
Items signed by Celia Thaxter are rather uncommon to the market. While we
have seen portions of Thaxter's poems written in her own hand, we have not
seen any examples of the entire text of one of her Poems written, signed,
and dated by Celia Thaxter other than the one described herein. A SCARCE,
COMPLETE POEM WRITTEN, DATED, AND SIGNED BY CELIA THAXTER, ONE OF THE MOST
POPULAR AMERICAN POETS OF HER ERA. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.
