*Description*

An Original Manuscript Letter Signed from H. Rider Haggard, the English
author of Adventure Novels set primarily in Africa. His most notable works
include "King Solomon's Mines", "She: A History of Adventure", "Allan
Quatermain", "Ayesha: The Return of She", "The Witch's Head", and "Dawn".
Dated by Haggard "Oct. 15.1923" and written on the recto of a single sheet
of Haggard's Ditchingham House stationary (measuring approximately 10
inches X 8 inches), the letter is written entirely in Haggard's hand and
does not name the addressee. In the letter Haggard states: "I trust that
your expedition will be / very successful in its work of filming / the life
& the scenes of the African labours / of David Livingstone. _ I am sure
that / it will be an enormous advantage to the / Students of the life-work
of this great man / who did so much for civilization & religion, / to look
at pictures of places that he has / made famous, & to learn from them how
won- / derful was the perseverance which en- / abled him, almost unaided,
to force his way / through fever-stricken swamps & jungles where, at that /
time, no white man had set his foot. - / H. Rider Haggard". We presume the
film referred to by Haggard to be the 1925 biographical silent film
directed by M. A. Wetherell and starring Wetherell, Molly Rogers, and Henry
Walton, a film which depicts Livingstone's efforts to end slavery in Africa
and to bring education to that great continent, as well as Livingstone's
celebrated meeting with Henry Morton Stanley. The letter (presumably
written by H. Rider Haggard to M. A. Wetherell) is in Very Good + to Near
Fine condition - showing a few small stains, mild creasing, intersecting
folds for mailing, and a small tear (about 1 inch) at the right edge at one
of the folds. An excellent letter from H. Rider Haggard, one of the 20th
Century's most notable Authors, concerning a film showing the famous
explorer, missionary, and searcher for the source of the Nile river, David
Livingstone --whose exploration of the central African watershed was the
culmination of the classic period of European geographical discovery and
colonial penetration of Africa. Livingstone was one of the most popular
national heroes of the late-19th-century in Victorian Britain, and this
letter relates to the depiction of his work in the African Continent
beloved to Haggard and where he, Haggard, set many of his most notable
works. AN EXCELLENT AND HIGHLY-RELEVANT H. RIDER HAGGARD MANUSCRIPT LETTER
SIGNED BY H. RIDER HAGGARD.
