Edmund Burke: Reflections on the Revolution in France, and on the Proceedings in Certain Societies in London relative to that Event. In a Letter intended to have been sent to a Gentleman in Paris. London: Printed for J. Dodsley, In Pall-Mall, MDCCXC [1790]. Modern boards and cloth spine, gilt-lettered leather spine label; 8vo (21 cm); iv + 356 pp. ESTC N48331; PMM 239; Rothschild 522; Todd 53c.

An early impression of one of the foundation texts of modern conservative political thought. "In the eternal debate between the ideal and the practical, the latter had never had a more powerful or moving advocate, nor one whose own ideals were higher" (Printing and the Mind of Man). According to Todd's collation points, this is the second impression of the second edition, but all the early impressions were published within a few days of the first, since Burke continued to revise his polemic as it went to press. There were at least seven stated editions of the work, with multiple impressions, within the first year. Damp-stain to the leaves at bottom of the gutter, becoming somewhat more pronounced towards the rear of the text block, with the last leaves showing weakening of the paper and the last leaf torn at the bottom margin; early/original owner's signature to the title-page.
