HANDY, William C. (W. C. HANDY). THEY THAT SOW IN TEARS (SHALL REAP IN
JOY). PSALMS 126 V.5-6-1-2. New York: Handy Brothers Music Co., (1950).
Sheet music INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the composer on the dedication page
to fellow composer and accordionist Tony Lavelli in 1951. One of the
most influential of American songwriters, Handy is known as the "Father
of the Blues." A piece of music by Lavelli is included. Fine.

Handy was a deeply religious man, whose influences in his musical style
were found in the church music he sang and played as a youth. The 1912
publication of his "Memphis Blues" sheet music introduced his style of
12-bar blues to many households and was credited as the inspiration for
the invention of the foxtrot dance step. Some consider it to be the
first blues song. Because of the difficulty of getting his works
published, he published many of his own works and was among the first
blacks who were successful as music publishers. Perhaps his most famous
composition is "St. Louis Blues." (#009783) $350.00
