Uncommon 1929 Book on Algerian Rugs & Carpets
“L’Industrie du Tapis a la Kalaa des Beni-Rached (Oran)”
By Lucienne Bonnet.
Published in Algiers by Jules Carbonel in 1929.
A survey of the carpet industry and history of carpet-making in the
towns of Kalaa and Beni-Rached, which were in the Colonial French
Province of Oran (which was larger than the current Oran Province). The
text begins with a short history of the towns and their occupation by
the Turks, Spanish and French, and then continues with a section devoted
to the development of historical carpet making in the towns, followed by
a section discussing the current (early 20th century) carpet-making
trade there. Very uncommon.
Softcover. 6.5”x9.5”, 162 pages, 1 black & white illustration and 10
black & white plates (3 of weaving patterns, 7 of rugs), and 10 line
illustrations. Covers with moderate wear, some soil. Tips of first pages
creased, endpapers soiled and worn, and with some additional light
internal soil. Inscription by the author on the endpaper. $60
