March 1986 John Ciardi Handwritten Letter Two Weeks Before His Death.
An interesting hand-written letter from John Ciardi, on his stationary,
dated March 12, 1986, just a few weeks before his death on March 30. He
writes to William Schlicht, editor of the Key West Review, politely
explaining that he does not give many talks these days, and in any case
has a cold and will not drive until he recovers. He goes on to say that
he keeps Februarys free and if Schlicht would write back in December
they could probably set something up for February (1987). He also
explains that he is starting to have trouble walking and that might be
an issue, but ends by looking forward, “with such hopes as we are
permitted”, to hearing back in December and setting something up for
January or February. Ciardi died of a heart attack just over two weeks
later. Poignant. Single sheet, minor soil. [43285] $200
