John Burke: A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Commoners of Great Britain and Ireland, Enjoying Territorial Possessions or High Official Rank; but Uninvested with Heritable Honours. London: Henry Colburn, 1836-38. First edition. Four volumes (complete); large 8vos in early half crimson roan over pebbled cloth; engraved frontispiece in each volume, in-text illustrations of coats of arms and heraldic devices.
What the author had done for the nobility in his redoubtable Burke's Peerage, he here does for those untitled citizens of the realm worthy of notice. Bindings with rubbing and wear to the edges and spines, cloth a bit frayed and creased on the rear cover of vol. IV; contents with offsetting from the frontispieces, occasional scattered spotting, but generally quite clean, firmly bound. Front paste-downs with old, small binder's labels: "Bound by Gregory & Son, Queen Square, Bath."
