Memoirs of His Serene Highness Antony-Philip d'Orléans, Duke of Montpensier, Prince of the Blood. Written by Himself. Translated from the French. London: Treuttel and Würtz, Treuttel jun. and Richter, 1824. First edition thus; 8vo (23 cm), untrimmed in modern green cloth with gilt-lettered leather spine label; xvi, 264, [4] pp.; with the half-title page, frontispiece portrait, and publisher's adverts.
Louis Antoine Philippe d'Orléans (1775-1807) was the son of the Duke of Orléans ("Philippe Egalité") and younger brother of the future King Louis Philippe I. Imprisoned during the Reign of Terror, he subsequently spent several years in exile with his brothers in America, traveling in New England and the Great Lakes and Mississippi areas, before sailing for England, where he died at the age of 32 from tuberculosis contracted during his years of imprisonment. Some mild toning to the leaves and untrimmed edges, a few occasional small spots and stains, early presentation inscription on the front (blank) endpaper, else quite clean, firmly and freshly rebound.
