Thomas Sternhold, John Hopkins: The Booke of Psalmes: Collected into English Meeter, by Thomas Sternehold, Iohn Hopkins, and others: conferred with the Hebrew; with apt Notes to sing them withall. Set forth and allowed to be sung in all Churches, of the people together, before and after Morning and Euening Prayer: as also before and after Sermon; and moreouer in priuate houses, for their godly solace and comfort, laying apart all vngodly Songs and Ballads, which tend onely to the nourishment of vice, and corrupting of youth. [Amsterdam: J.F. Stam.: ca. 1617-1639]. Small 4to (21.5 cm) in later boards with leather spine label lettered in gilt; [10], 93 [i.e. 91], [11] pp. (page 91 misnumbered as 93); musical notation.
An early, surreptitious Dutch printing of these psalms by Sternhold and Hopkins, creators of the first complete English-language metrical version of the psalms. Contains the 150 psalms, 23 hymns and some prayers/confession of faith. Many of the first verses are accompanied by musical notation. In this printing, the “C” on leaf C1 is under the “rd” of “heard.” Front joint cracked with the front board loosened but attached; occasional mild browning and spotting, more noticeable on the last few leaves; closed horizontal tear to the fore-edge of the last leaf; else clean and sound, a good copy. Front paste-down with the book label of Rev. Herbert Boyce Satcher, noted book collector and bibliographer of church music; rear pastedown with the bookplate of the Satcher Bequest (1966).
