William Melmoth [trans.]: The Letters of Pliny the Consul: With Occasional Remarks. London: Printed for R. Dodsley at Tully’s Head in Pall-Mall, and sold by W. Thurlbourn in Cambridge, 1747. The second edition, corrected (same year as the first). Two volumes, 8vo, in period calf; [12], 368 pp; [4], [369]-692, [4] pp.; with the half-titles, engraved title-page vignettes. ESTC T180687.
Bindings worn, spines rubbed and dried with the loss of spine labels, joints cracked with the front boards nearly detached; front (blank) endpaper in both vols. detached but present, generally mild toning to the contents with occasional scattered spotting, a few small stains and touches of soiling. Front paste-downs with the signed (“A. Johnston, Sculp.”) engraved armorial bookplates of “The Honble. George Baillie, Esq. one of the Lords of the Treasury,” dated 1724. George Baillie (1664-1738) was a Scottish politician and MP who played a prominent role in the Act of Union between Scotland and England (1707). As the present work was published after Baillie’s death, one assumes the bookplates were added by his daughter, Grisell Baillie, whose signature can be found on both half-title pages.
