[Leigh Hunt, ed.:] The Liberal. Verse and Prose from the South. London: John Hunt, 1822-23. Two volumes (all published) bound in one; first edition, mixed issues. Thick 8vo in modern goatskin and marbled boards; xii, 399, [1] pp.; vii, 377, [5] pp.; with the leaf of publisher’s adverts at the end of vol. II.

A complete run of this short-lived reform-minded literary magazine begun by Leigh Hunt, Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley while they were residing in Italy. Edited and largely written by Hunt, it is most memorable, however, for the contributions by Byron (including The Vision of Judgment, Heaven and Earth, Epigrams on Lord Castlereagh, and The Blues, a Literary Ecologue), Shelley (May-Day Night) and William Hazlitt (On the Spirit of Monarchy). Toning to the leaves, most noticeable on the first and last few pages, a very few small spots and stains, else clean and sound and firmly bound in a handsome modern binding. A nice, solid copy.
