[George Howard] Earl of Carlisle: Diary of Turkish and Greek Waters. London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1854. First edition; 8vo in original publisher's cloth; xi, [1], 353, 24 pp.; with the publisher's catalog at the rear. Blackmer 835.

In addition to providing intimate gossip about contemporary life in Athens, the earl offers his impressions of Constantinople, the Hellespont and the Bosphorus, the Sea of Marmara, Troy, Smyrna, Rhodes, Eleusis, Marathon, Tripoli, the Lebanon, Malta, Corfu, and many other places. Bumping to the corners, rubbing and wear to the edges, spine ends and rear joint; toning and dust-soiling to the edges of the text block, a few leaves roughly opened along the top edge; a few light (erasable) penciled comments by an early and irascible owner ("gammon", "what a d—d old fool…", etc.).
