JARRELL, Randall. THE SEVEN-LEAGUE CRUTCHES with a MANUSCRIPT VERSE. New
York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, (1951). First Edition. His fourth
book. INSCRIBED on the front free endpaper and SIGNED by the poet "For
Joanne, from a poem about a very/different sort of Woman's College
girl/Randall Jarrell" below Jarrell's handwritten last stanza of a poem
in the book, "A Girl in a Library":
Don't cry, little peasant. Sit and dream.
One comes, a finger’s width beneath your skin,
To the braided maidens singing as they spin;
There sound the shepherd's pipe, the watchman's rattle
Across the short dark distance of the years.
I am a thought of yours: and yet, you do not think...
The firelight of a long, blind, dreaming story
Lingers upon your lips; and I have seen
Firm, fixed forever in your closing eyes,
The Corn King beckoning to his Spring Queen.
Light soiling and wear at bottom of boards. Very Good in a supplied Fine
dustwrapper. (#018445) $3,500.00
