Arthur Young: Travels During the Years 1787, 1788, & 1789; Undertaken More Particularly with a View of Ascertaining the Cultivation, Wealth, Resources, and National Prosperity of the Kingdom of France. The second edition. London: Printed for W. Richardson, Royal-Exchange, 1794. Two volumes, 4to (29 cm), in early quarter calf and marbled boards, rebacked in diced calf, gilt-lettered spine labels; viii, 629, [3] pp.; [4], 336, [4] pp.; 3 engraved folding maps, one hand-colored, tables, half-title in vol. II. ESTC T78081; Goldsmiths’ 15937.

Called the second edition, but in fact the first edition thus, revised and enlarged: vol.I is substantially the same as the one-volume 1792 edition, but vol.II is new matter, with the exception of the chapter on "Vines"; and bears the imprint: Bury St. Edmund’s, printed by J. Rackham, for W. Richardson, London, 1794; and was apparently sometimes also issued separately (ESTC). Rubbing and edge-wear to the boards; ink stamps to the title-pages (no other library markings), scattered spotting throughout, mostly relegated to the margins, else generally clean and sound, firmly bound.

An essential source on the period by Arthur Young (1741-1820), a peripatetic and prolific author of works on agriculture and political economy. "Admitted by the ablest French writers to contain the best account of the state of France previous to the Revolution; and the numerous defects in the agricultural economy of that kingdom were never so clearly pointed out as by Young" (McCulloch: Literature of Political Economy).
