[Anonymous:] Memorandums of a Residence in France, in the Winter of 1815-16, including Remarks on French Manners and Society, with a Description of the Catacombs, and notices of some other objects of curiosity and works of art, not hitherto described. London: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1816. FIRST EDITION; 8vo (22 cm) in recent green cloth with gilt-lettered leather spine label; x + 404 pp.

A rather uncommon account of France in the early days of the Bourbon Restoration. The anonymous author confines himself mostly to Paris, though he does make a side-trip to Waterloo, including a "Return over the Field of Battle by Moonlight." There are additional observations on the catacombs, museums, gambling-houses, Robertson's Philosophical Theatre (with a Speaking Machine), Prussian and Russian officers, the trial and execution of Marshal Ney, French Opinion of the English Government, boxing, theatre, opera, etc., etc. Intermittent scattered foxing, most noticeable on the first and last few leaves, early owner's signature on the front free-endpaper, else quite clean and sound, firmly bound in a fresh, sharp modern binding.
