Benjamin Martin: The Young Gentleman and Lady’s Philosophy, in a Continued Survey of the Works of Nature and Art; by Way of Dialogue. Containing, the Philosophy of the Heavens and of the Atmosphere...The second edition corrected. London: Printed and sold by W. Owen, Temple-Bar ; and by the Author, at his House in Fleet-Street, MDCCLXXII. [1772]. Two volumes, 8vo (21.5 cm) in early/period calf; [12], 408, [16] pp.; [8], 416, [16] pp.; with 52 copper-engraved plates, some folding (lacking one plate); half-title in vol. I. ESTC T25360.

Binding worn, rubbed and scuffed, front joint of vol. I professionally repaired, front joint of vol. II cracked but secure; contents with some occasional light spotting and minor stains and soiling, but generally clean; one folding plate with long closed tear, a few other plates with short closed tears at the edges and folds, one with small hole along fold, another trimmed along neatline. Vol. II with the engraved bookplate of James Roberts to front pastedown and the signature of William Marriott [of] Earls Barton on the front free endpaper. While the work is largely focused on astronomy, cosmology and meteorology, the second volume contains sections on optics (“the Philosophy of Light and Colours, and the Use of all Sorts of Optical Instruments”) and acoustics (“the Philosophy of Sounds, Music, and the Organization of the Ear”).
