[Henry Home, Lord Kames:] The Gentleman Farmer. Being an Attempt to improve Agriculture, by subjecting it to the Test of Rational Principles. The second edition, with considerable additions. Edinburgh: Printed for John Bell, MDCCLXXIX [1779]. Early/period full speckled calf with gilt-tooled spine, modern spine label, 8vo (21.5 cm); xxviii, 438, [2] pp.; with the final leaf of advertisements, 3 engraved plates (complete). ESTC T55417.

Binding with some rubbing, bumping/wear to the corners, rear exterior joint cracked but secure; contents with intermittent spotting, browning, and damp-staining (mostly light, but more pronounced on approx. 30 leaves), three leaves with ink doodlew in the margins; else clean and sound, firmly bound. Lord Kames (1692-1782), the eminent Scottish judge and legal philosopher, here offers agricultural wisdom gleaned from extensive experience managing and observing Blair Drummond, the Perthshire estate inherited by his wife. With sections on plows, harrows, cattle, crops, grasses, manures, fences, etc,. etc.
