William Preston: The Poetical Works of William Preston, Esq. in two volumes. Dublin: Printed for the Author, by Graisberry & Campbell, & sold by J. Archer, 1793. FIRST EDITION. Two volumes, 8vo (21 cm), in nineteenth-century half calf and marbled boards, gilt-lettered spine labels, marbled endpapers and page edges; xix, [3], 417, [1] pp.; [4], iii, [3], 399, [1] pp.; with the half-title in vol. II as called for; engraved portrait frontispiece (signed: H. Brocas) and numerous engraved vignettes. ESTC T10098.

William Preston (1753-1807) was an Irish barrister, playwright, poet and essayist, and a co-founder of the Royal Irish Academy. A political reactionary, his play Democratic Rage, an indictment of the excesses of the French Revolution, was produced in Dublin in the same year as this collection and was a notable success. Bindings with some rubbing and shelf-wear; contents with offsetting from the engravings, occasional light spotting, one or two small stains, but generally very clean and sound, securely bound. One paste-down with the small booklabel of noted book collector J. O. Edwards. A nice example of a rather uncommon set.
