Robert Plot: The Natural History of Oxford-shire, being an Essay towards the Natural History of England... The Second Edition, with large Additions and Corrections: Also a short Account of the Author, &c. Oxford: Printed by Leon. Lichfield, for Charles Brome...and John Nicholson, London, 1705. Folio (32.5 cm) in full modern but not recent morocco; [12], 366, [10] pp; engraved plates. ESTC T149630.

Lacking the map and all but 4 of the plates. Sunning/browning to the spine; damp-stain to the inner margin of the first and last few leaves (most prominent on the last two leaves of the index), a few occasional small spots and stains elsewhere, otherwise unusually clean, bright and crisp, firmly bound. Front paste-down with the bookplate of noted English bibliophile Charles Benson. A survey not only of the region’s natural history (geology, flora and fauna, rivers, etc.) but to a certain extent its political history, as well as scientific inventions, antiquities, curiosities, etc. First published in 1677, it was intended as the first of a multi-volume survey of all England, a project Plot never realized, completeing only one further volume, on Staffordshire, in his lifetime.
