London: Smith, Elder and Co. 1867. 8vo. xviii,469,(1)pp. Illustrated with 2 portraits. Orig. rust cloth, gilt stamped. Spine extremities chipped and cloth somewhat worn. There is some old water damage at the outer corner of the front cover, also at the top of the first few preliminary leaves. Both portraits with old water tide-marks. The text is surprisingly quite clean. This copy with an autograph presentation signed by Queen Victoria; "To General Sir Wm. Knollys, K.C.B. In Recollection of former Happy Days, From Victoria, Osbourne [Osbourne House on the Isle of Wight] Aug. 7, 1867.    $1,000.00 (trade discount allowed)
Knollys (1797-1883) had a distinguished military career, but in 1862 the Queen selected him as Treasurer and Comptroller of the household of the Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VII). He held this position, in effect a member of the Queen's extended family, for 15 years.
