Castiglione, Baldasarre. IL LIRBO [sic] DEL CORTEGIANO. Venice: (Alvise Tortis). 1539. 8vo. ff.210,(2). Final two leaves blank, the final used as the rear pastedown. Large woodcut printer's device on title depicting a large pelican feeding 3 chicks, and a globe with the printer's initials "AT". Orig. vellum, the spine covered with a strip of calf, for some repair to the original backstrip. A very nice copy of a scarce early edition.    $1,500.00 (trade discount allowed)
The first issue with the typo "Lirbo," later changed (corrected) to "Libro." This important Italian courtesy book, dealing with proper etiquette and moral conduct first appeared in 1528. Adams C927. Not in BL Italian STC.
