Snorri Sturluson; Samuel Laing: The Heimskringla; or, Chronicle of the Kings of Norway. Translated from the Icelandic of Snorro Sturleson, with a Preliminary Dissertation. London: Printed for Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1844. FIRST EDITION. Three volumes, 8vo, in original publisher's ribbed cloth stamped in blind, gilt-lettered spine titles; vi, 485, [1], 2 pp.; [4], 399, [1] pp.; [4], 393, 2, 32 pp.; with the publisher's catalogs at the rear of vols. I and III.

First edition of Laing's translation of Sturleson's epic 13th-century history of the Norwegian kings from pre-historical legends through the late Middle Ages. Includes Laing's 210-page introductory "dissertation." Bindings with very modest bumping and wear to the extremities, otherwise unusually fresh, glossy and bright; a few page-gatherings roughly opened at the fore-edges, else the contents are very clean and sound, firmly bound. It’s possible the front paste-downs and front (blank) endpapers have been professionally renewed/replaced. A nice copy.
