Captain Fred Burnaby: On Horseback through Asia Minor. London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, 1877. Fifth edition. Two volumes, 8vo (23 cm), in original decorated cloth bindings; mounted photographic frontispiece, three folding maps (complete).

Tipped onto the front free-endpaper is a signed note from the author, dated March 14th [18]78, on Marlborough Club stationery: “Dear Dolby[?] I have written to Sampson & Lowe to send you a copy. Yours very sincerely Fred Burnaby.” A penciled note on the verso of the title-page reads: “J.E.A.[?] Dolby from Capt. Burnaby.” Burnaby (1842-1885) was an explorer, adventurer and British Army intelligence officer. Having spent years playing the “Great Game” against the Russians in Central Asia, he was eventually killed while fighting the Mahdists in the Sudan. The present work describes his two-thousand mile journey through Asia Minor and is especially valuable for its observations on Turkish geography, cultures and customs.

Bindings a bit shaken, but secure; rubbed and worn with loss and fraying to the spine ends and some splitting along the joints; front paste-downs with the bookplates of the University of Texas Library (no other library marks); rear endpaper of vol. I removed; contents with occasional soiling and pencilings in the margins; two maps with some creasing and tears at the folds, frontispiece map in vol. II neatly detached from the text block.
