Premiere partie, Depuis le commencement du monde jusqu'a l'Empire de Charlemagne. [BOUND WITH:] Continuation de l'Histoire Universelle de Messire Jacques Benigne Bossuet... Depuis l'an 800 de Notre Seigneur jusqu'a l'an 1700, inclusivement. Amsterdam: aux depens d'Estienne Roger, 1710, 1704. Two works bound in one volume; thick 12mo (16.5 cm) in early/period polished calf, spine elaborately tooled in gilt, gilt-lettered morocco spine label; 438, [6] pp.; 217, [23] pp.; publisher's catalogue bound in at the end; engraved frontispieces and title-page vignettes.
First edition of the second part, tenth edition of the first part. According to COPAC, the second part of Bossuet's Discours sur l'histoire universelle is in fact by Jean de la Barre. Binding with bumping to the corners, some loss to the spine foot, cracking to the front joint but the board is secure; lacking the front free (blank) endpaper, offsetting/browning to and from the second title-page; small ink stain to the fore-edge of the text block; some browning to the leaves (more noticeable in the second part), occasional small spots and touches of soiling. Front paste-down with the attractive 20th-century bookplate of H.J.C.[?] van Santen, Groningen.
