Thomas Madox: Firma Burgi, or An Historical Essay concerning the Cities Towns and Buroughs of England. Taken from Records. London: Printed by William Bowyer; and Sold by Robert Gosling at the Middle-Temple-Gate in Fleetstreet, MDCCXXVI [1726]. First edition. Tall folio (40 cm) in period speckled calf stamped in blind, rebacked in modern calf, gilt-lettered spine label; [24], 297, [31] pp.; with a list of subscribers and and index; numerous engraved vignettes, initials, head- and tail-pieces. Goldsmiths' 6493; Maslen & Lancaster 1212; ESTC T97070.

A handsome copy of this survey of early English municipal history compiled by "His Majesties Historiographer." The list of subscribers includes Francis Nicholson, Governor of South Carolina. Boards with a few scuffs and professional leather repairs, inner hinges reinforced; first two leaves with some chipping to the fore-edge, text block a bit dust-soiled and toned at the top edge, early/original owner's occasional ink underlinings and marginal notes, else the contents are clean and exceedingly fresh and bright, firmly bound.
