Answer. to Three Scurrilous Pamphlets, entitled The Jockey Club. London: Printed for J. S. Jordan, no. 166, Fleet-Street, [ca. 1792]. Slim 8vo (21 cm) in calf-backed marbled boards, spine tooled in gilt, gilt-lettered spine label; [3]-119, [1] pp.
An indignant reply to The Jockey Club, a collection of caustic, satirical, and scatological pseudo-biographies of the British aristocracy by Charles Piggot. Here, the anonymous author defends those "Great Men" who were the targets of Piggot's "libelous" and impertinent barbs. Affixed to the verso of the title-page is the author's advertisement, addressed to the Jockey Club's publisher, J. S. Jordan, challenging him to publish this rebuttal as well, a challenge which Jordan apparently took up. Bound without the half-title page. Boards with some wear and bumping to the corners and edges; contents with occasional spotting, title-page with a stain from the advertisement on the verso. An uncommon title.
