[William Hone:] Buonapartephobia. The Origin of Dr. Slop's Name. London: Printed by and for William Hone, 1820. "Ninth edition," but first edition thus. Tall 8vo (22 cm) in later morocco-backed cloth by Birdsall & Son, Northampton; 16 pp.; engraved title-page vignette. Light wear to the extremities, rubbing/scuffing to the joints; light toning to the leaves, a few small spots. Bookplate of English journalist and noted bibliophile Charles Whibley ("Sum Caroli Whibley").

With an added preface by the author dated 27th Nov. 1820. "Dr. Slop" was John Stoddart, editor of the New Times, formerly a leader-writer on the Times, and long the target of Hone's ridicule for his intemperate, coarsely expressed tirades against Napoleon. Hone first published the pamphlet in 1815, and, as he states in his preface, "It is my intention to reprint it in this lasting shape, from time to time, and so long as the Doctor daily empties his night-slush from the Slop-pail..."
