Jean Baptiste Leonard Durand: A Voyage to Senegal; or, Historical, Philosophical and Political Memoirs Relative to the Discoveries, Establishments, and Commerce of Europeans in the Atlantic Ocean from Cape Blanco to the River of Sierra Leone. To which is added an Account of a Journey from Isle St. Louis to Galam. London: Printed for Richard Phillips, 1806. First edition; 8vo (21.5 cm) rebound in modern green morocco, gilt-lettered spine labels; viii, 181, [3] pp.; with a folding engraved map and 4 (of 7) plates.

Binding with some sunning to the spine and edges; offsetting and a touch of edge-wear to the folding map, contents with occasional browning, a few small spots; lacking three of the plates. Durand had been director of the French Compagnie de la gomme du Senegal and his time in-country was often frustrating, giving his account a somewhat bitter tone. The work contains descriptions of the region’s flora, fauna, and indigenous peoples, as well as extensive observations on the slave trade, circumcision, funeral rites, etc.
