Richard F. Burton: Zanzibar; City, Island, and Coast. London: Tinsley Brothers, 1872. First edition. Two volumes, 8vo (22 cm), in early/original cloth bindings, top page edges gilt; xii, [2], 503, [1] pp.; vi, [2], 519, [1] pp.

With the four sketch maps present in vol. I, but lacking the folding map and the plates. Ex-library with ink stamps to the title-pages and occasionally elsewhere, paste-downs with old cello-tape stains and removed bookplates, a few other markings; bindings with rubbing, edge-wear, and sunning to the spines, front inner hinges cracked at the title-page, but holding; contents with a few small spots, touches of soiling, and pencil marks in the margins, otherwise generally clean and sound. Old, tangentially related newspaper clipping loosely laid in. An imperfect but textually complete first edition of an uncommon and important work, containing not only Burton's observations on the superficially exotic but fundamentally corrupt island of Zanzibar, but also his memorial to John Hanning Speke and an account of their famous expedition to the lake regions of East Africa in search of the Nile's source.
