Richard F. Burton: A Mission to Gelele, King of Dahome : With Notices of the So-Called "Amazons," the Grand Customs, the Yearly Customs, the Human Sacrifices, the Present State of the Slave Trade, and the Negro's Place in Nature. London: Tylston and Edwards, 1893. Two volumes, 8vo (22 cm), in original publisher's black cloth lettered and decorated in gilt, black endpapers, top page edges dyed red; 256, 305 pp.; with tissue-guarded frontispiece in each volume.

Burton's colorful account of his frustrating mission to convince the king of Dahomey to temper some of his more excessive practices. Issued as part of the posthumous "Memorial Edition" of Burton's works, edited by his widow Isabel. Bindings with some bumps and wear to the edges and extremities, a little light rubbing, spines slightly cocked; one tissue guard with a short tear at the gutter; light spotting to the first and last few leaves, else clean and sound.
