William Astor Chanler: Through Jungle and Desert : Travels in East Africa... With illustrations from photographs taken by the author and maps. London: Macmillan and Co., 1896. First edition. Large, heavy 8vo (25 cm) in original publisher's navy blue polished buckram, spine lettered in gilt, gilt device of a lion on upper board; upper page edges gilt; xiv + 535 pp.; portrait frontispiece, black&white plates, two large folding color maps in a pocket at the back.

Well-illustrated and highly readable account of Chanler's travels and misadventures in East Africa with the Austrian explorer Ludwig von Höhnel. During their expedition, they mapped the Guasso Nyiro and Tana Rivers, the Lorian Swamp, Lake Rudolph and Lake Stefanie. An avid hunter, Chanler supplied many specimens to the American Museum of Natural History, and his work is considered one of the best accounts of African big game hunting. Binding with some rubbing, bumping and wear to the corners, fraying at the spine foot; inner hinges cracked and the heavy text block slightly shaken but secure; leaves generally clean and bright, folding maps in very good condition. Front paste-down with the bookplate of Nathanial Cushing Nash.
