Lieut. Count Thomas O'Neil: A Concise and Accurate Account of the Proceedings of the Squadron under the Command of Rear Admiral Sir Sidney Smith, K. S. &c. in Effecting the Escape of the Royal Family of Portugal to the Brazils, on November, 29, 1807; And also the Sufferings of the Royal Fugitives, &c. during their Voyage from Lisbon to Rio Janeiro: with a Variety of other Interesting and Authentic Facts. London: Printed by J. Barfield, 91, Wardour-Street, for the Author, 15, Carlisle-Street, Soho-Square, 1810. First edition thus. Tall 8vo (23.5) in original publisher's parchment-backed blue boards; vi, 89, [1] pp; with the errata slip, list of subscribers and engraved frontispiece.

Scarce eyewitness account of the dramatic escape of the Portuguese royal family from "the ferocious, unrelenting spirit of subjugation...of that arch-fiend of the world, Buonaparte," and their safe transfer to Brazil under the protection of the Royal Navy. Among the royal refugees was the nine-year-old future Brazilian emperor Dom Pedro I. This edition contains observations on life in Rio de Janeiro and Bahia (San Salvador) not included in the author's self-published edition of the previous year.

Complete with the frontispiece, often lacking, and with the presumably very scarce errata slip tipped in. Binding with modest bumping to the extremities, early ink manuscript title and some chipping to the spine; contents with light toning and occasional small spots and touches of soiling, else clean and sound; much of the text is unopened (meaning the page-gatherings are still joined at the top edges as issued), hence unread.
