F[rancois-Auguste] Biard: Deux Annees au Bresil... Ouvrage illustre de 180 vignettes dessines par E. Riou d'apres les croquis de M. Biard. Paris: Hachette, 1862. First edition. Thick 8vo (25 cm) in early/period quarter red morocco and marbled boards, marbled endpapers, top page edges gilt; 680 pp.; numerous engraved plates and in-text illustrations, folding map. Sabin 5134.

Profusely and handsomely illustrated with engravings after sketches by the author, a successful French genre painter of the time. His artistic career in a lull, François-Auguste Biard (1799-1882) traveled to Brazil in 1858 and spent two years living and traveling in Rio de Janeiro, Espirito Santo, Bahia, Amazônia, and elsewhere. He was one of the very first European artists of note to spend time with and depict the indigenous population of the rain forest and the interior. Binding with light wear and rubbing, a hint of sunning to the spine; light toning to the fore-edge of the text block, but with the contents exceptionally clean and bright, free of foxing, firmly bound. A very nice copy.
