Sir Martin Conway: Aconcagua and Tierra del Fuego: A Book of Climbing, Travel and Exploration. London: Cassell and Company, 1902. FIRST EDITION; 8vo in original publisher's cloth with the spine lettered in gilt, front cover lettered in white; xii, 252, 8 pp.; with the half-title page and publisher's adverts, 27 plates of photographs and a map.

Sunning to the spine, some spotting and color loss to the front board, modest bumping to the extremities; early owner's signature to the front flyleaf, light dust-soiling to the edges of the text block, mild toning to the leaves, otherwise very clean and fresh. Front paste-down with the bookplate of the Steve Fossett Collection of Adventure & Exploration. Fossett (1944-2007), avid bibliophile, adventurer, record-holding sailor, aviator and aeronaut, was the first person to complete a solo nonstop circumnavigation of the globe in a balloon.

Surprisingly uncommon autobiographical account of the final expedition of Martin Conway, noted British mountaineer and explorer, and president of the Alpine Club. Aconcagua, one of the so-called Seven Summits, is in the Argentinian Andes and is the highest mountain in both the Western and Southern Hemispheres.
