Front paste-downs with the striking armorial bookplates of Johannis [John] Etherington Welch Rolls. The story of a disastrous disinheritance of a son by his father, one of the best known works by the prolific Scottish novelist John Galt (1779-1839). "[Galt] wrote three admirable studies of country life in Scotland by which he deserves to be remembered: The Ayrshire Legatees, Annals of the Parish, and The Entail" (Oxford Companion to English Literature).

[John Galt:] Ringan Gilhaize; or The Covenanters. By the Author of "Annals of the Parish," Sir Andrew Wylie," "The Entail," &c. Edinburgh: Printed for Oliver & Boyd, 1823. FIRST EDITION. Three Volumes, 8vo (19 cm), in three-quarters forest green morocco over linen-covered boards, marbled endpapers, top page edges gilt. With the half-title pages. Wolff 2399; not in Sadleir. Bindings with some sunning to the spines and wear to the extremities; toning to the untrimmed fore-edges of the tex blocks, a few occasional small spots to the leaves, early owner's penciled note to the last p. of vol. II, else clean and sound, firmly bound. John Galt: The Bachelor's Wife; A Selection of Curious and Interesting Extracts, with Cursory Observations. Edinburgh: Oliver & Boyd, 1824. Toning to the untrimmed edges of the text block, early/original owner's signature on the title-page, one leaf with tape-repaired tear, else exceptionally clean and bright, firmly bound. A nice, fresh copy of this eccentric miscellany of literary criticism, social observations, travel sketches, verses, etc. — laced with occasional extracts from better-known authors — by the prolific Scottish writer John Galt (1779-1839), considered "the forerunner of the realistic movement in Scottish fiction" (Kunitz and Haycraft).
