THE BRITISH POETS. Edinburgh: A. Kincaid and W. Creech. 1773-1776. 12mo. 44 volumes. Complete. Bound in contemporary full red morocco, ornately gilt spines with 2 spine labels, one reading "British Poets" the other is the author of that volume (as "Milton" etc.). A.e.g. Some light rubbing, but overall a beautiful set. Each volume has an inscription on a front blank, "A. M. C. Nelthorpe, the gift of her aunt Mrs. Mary Carter, 1789." Nelthorpe was the wife of Sir John Nelthorpe (d. circa 1799). The final volume published, James Beattie's POEMS ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS is the actual first edition. There are 4 volumes of Milton, 6 of Dryden, 4 of Pope, etc., etc.
