(MEXICO) Cumplido, Ignacio (ed.). EL ALBUM MEXICANO: Periodico de Literatura, Artes y Bellas Letras. Mexico: Imprenta del Editor. 1849. 4to. 2 volumes (all published). 616,(4);616,(4)pp. Index at back of each volume. Each volume consist of 26 issues. Volume 1 with a lithograph title (tinted), and 50 total plates, including 25 color lithographs, 23 black & white, and 2 maps and plans. Volume 2 with a lithograph title (not tinted) and 49 total plates, including 24 black & white lithos, 23 color lithographs, and 2 leaves of engraved music. Bound in later 19th century red calf over red mottled boards. Extremities a bit rubbed, but very sound and contents very clean.    $2,000.00 (trade discount allowed)
A complete run of this very scarce journal. The fabulous color plates are after "Les Fleurs Animees" of Jean Grandville (1847) depicting women as various types of flowers. Our set has a total of 48 colored plates. The only set with a collation we have been able to find is an ex-library set sold at auction in 2008 ($2,040) which had 49 total colored plates. 19th century periodicals bound up from their separate issues are notorious for varying plate counts. I strongly suspect 50 color plates may be the optimal number?
The literary contributions include poetry and prose and articles on famous Mexican and Americans of the day, such as Americans William Prescott, Washington Irving and Henry Clay. Numerous articles relate to the Mexican-American War, and life along the border between the two countries. Palau 5414 (without a plate count).  Sabin 48261.
